Sixth Security Workshop 2008

Globalization and Maritime Security

Washington DC, 29 - 31 July 2008

Call for Participation

We cordially invite you, your colleagues and associates to submit abstracts for participation to address emerging challenges of:

New security challenges emerging from climate change, pandemics, energy and food scarcity, and trans-national terrorism are not easily addressed by unilateral mechanisms or technology of the past.  Traditional interests in the safety of ports and strategic waterways are affected by globalization, and new modes of policy and technology collaboration will be necessary to meet challenges on the horizon.

We seek submissions of research presentations in both tracks. We request interested parties submit abstracts of research interests (containing no more than 250 words in English) to Security Workshop 2008, Abstraction Submission by June 30, 2008.

Security Challenges in the Context of Globalization

The following general research areas are of particular interest:

  1. Globalization systems,
  2. Shocks, trends and prevention, and
  3. Leadership development for complex environments.

Participants will share their presentations, exchange stories from current experiences and inquiries, and together we will develop thoughtful accounts of the state of the art and research requirements in these areas, and create draft research proposals.

Challenges of Maritime Security

Our goal for the Maritime Security track will be to advance research in the following three areas:

  1. Port Security,
  2. Global Maritime Partnerships, and
  3. Security in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

We are interested in expanding on existing research proposals already drafted in the above focus areas, with input from participants; these proposals can be referenced on our SAGE Maritime Security Forums.
